“Still think she had nothing to do with it?” Cooper asked when they were back in his truck.

Hannah hesitated before answering, but only for several seconds. “I don’t think she’s involved. I can’t entirely rule it out though.”

“Okay, well, what do you want to do now?”

That was the question, Hannah mused. “She said one thing that interested me, and it’s just further proof that she’s likely not involved. She said that there were probably symbols out at Casper Creek. I think we should go looking for them.”

Cooper nodded. “Okay. We can do that.” He put his key in the ignition and started it. “Just one question before we go,” he prodded.

Hannah waited. She knew he wasn’t going to grow suddenly shy and not ask it.

“Are you worried that Astra knowing about Marlee might mean that she’s going to seek her out and try to join forces with her?”

It was something Hannah had only briefly considered. “I think it’s unlikely,” she hedged.

“But not impossible,” Cooper deduced. “That’s what I figured.”

“Astra doesn’t want to share the nexus magic with anybody,” Hannah argued. “She’s not going to bring in a new witch unless she’s confident she can beat me and take out the new witch at the same time. She won’t risk herself because she knows she’ll only have one chance at moving on me before … well, before.” Hannah didn’t verbalize what was becoming increasingly obvious.

Cooper stared at her. Hard. He understood what she wasn’t saying. Hannah was afraid that when Astra finally did move on her, the only way to save herself and those she loved would be to take Astra out. It wasn’t as if Hannah hadn’t killed other witches and demons when they’d become threats. Astra was different, however. Hannah knew her, and even though they were enemies at the heart of it, they had worked together multiple times. Killing Astra would hurt Hannah.

“Let’s head back to Casper Creek,” Cooper said after several seconds. “If there are symbols there, we should find them.”

Hannah shot him a grateful look. “Yeah, let’s look for the symbols.” That’s easier than thinking about what I might have to do to Astra, she silently added. “If we find them, then we need to focus on destroying them.”

“Without triggering them.” Cooper was stern. “I don’t want another instance of you being afraid of me.”

“Cooper.” Hannah’s hand shot out before he could shift the truck into gear, and she wrapped her fingers around his wrist. “I wasn’t afraid of you. Not for a second. I was afraid for you. I need you to get that distinction and stop frustrating me.”

Cooper opted for honesty. “I can’t right now. I hate that you felt so alone. I’m not going to focus on it right now, though, either. We need to figure this out.”

“We definitely need to figure it out.”

“Just one more question.” Cooper leaned close but there was nothing playful about his expression. “What happens if you’re the one infected? Like … what if whoever is doing this tries to make you jealous?”

Hannah’s heart skipped a beat.
